After Belgians, The French Are Being Urged To Eat More Cheese As An Act Of Patriotism

The French Are Being Urged To Consume More Cheese

In an attempt to save the country’s famous ‘fromage’ industry, dairy producers have collectively asked French citizens to consume more cheese and thereby show their patriotism to the country.According to a press release by France Terre de Lait, consumption of certain cheeses in the country has dropped by 60 percent. This fall in sales is largely attributed to the closure of supermarkets, restaurants and local cheese-mongers.Due to the lockdown, the French have only been buying essential goods instead of comfort foods like cheese. And as per the Telegraph, French citizens have been wary of buying over-the-counter cheese products due to fear of germs and hygiene standards. This has put the French cheese producers in a massive problem, with thousands of tons of cheese at risk of being thrown away. To combat this, a campaign has been launched in the country to encourage the French to increase their cheese consumption. Called ‘Fromagissons’, which means ‘Let’s act for cheese’, the campaign calls on consumers to eat cheese in solidarity with the cheese producers.
